This event has now passed.Leonard McGurr
aka Futura has had a long career as an innovative street artist. Starting out as a graffiti artist in the early '70s, he's since taken his unique and finely tuned style from the street to the gallery. Seen on everything from hoodies to album covers, Futura's work is distinctive, full of personality and instantly recognisable. Originally highly-regarded in graffiti circle's for his deft and superbly-skilful control of the spray can, Futura made his first forays into galleries in the early '80s.
Some of Futura's work for UNKLE
In the '90s Futura gained extra exposure through his work with the Mo' Wax record label and the electronic music group UNKLE. Some of the characters he devised during that period make an appearance at this exhibition. The show is definitely not backward-looking though. Futura has created a series of brand new pieces involving straight, controlled vertical lines which have never been exhibited elsewhere. Many of the works have not been seen in other locations, as a result of Futura's spontaneous approach to creation, which he talks about in our interview
with him. There is plenty of breathing space for the work in the MD Gallery space, which encourages a slower, more leisurely viewing pace, and this exhibition presents a fantastic opportunity to see up close the work of one of the best street artists to have ever lived.
