This event has now passed. The Chalet doesn’t immediately come to mind when you think of brunch, but this laidback bar’s brunch menu (just launched at the end of last month) is just as much of a bargain as its underrated dinner options. The ‘winter brunch’, so-called because it runs from October to March (not because it uses seasonal ingredients) is an eight-dish homage to two sacred American principles: unfussy cooking and excellent value.
Prices start at 45RMB (for banana walnut pancakes with jam and butter) and each order includes a choice of four juices or two cups of tea or coffee. The Chalet’s Eggs Benedict (65RMB,technically an Eggs Royal made with smoked salmon not ham) passes the litmus test. The choice of ciabatta bread makes a terrific sponge for soaking up the yolk-y Hollandaise; the roast potatoes on the side won’t rock your world but do give you a little extra.
If you’re starving, the Mexico beef chilli cheese burrito (65RMB) is an impressively large take on a breakfast burrito. As with much on offer at The Chalet, it’s unrefined – the filling tastes a bit like Campbell’s chilli-in-a-can – but it does the job.
