Five interesting Christian churches for mass services in Shanghai

Muen Church (Moore Memorial Church)
Shanghai is home to dozens of Christian churches and these are some of the most interesting and historic offering mass and services close to downtown.

Hengshan Community ChurchHengshan Community Church was built by Americans back in 1925. The ivy-covered church has a striking, arched wooden ceiling, and its multi-denominational congregation is probably Shanghai’s most international.

Hong Ta ChurchHong De Tang (Fitch Memorial Church) is the only Christian church in town with Chinese architectural characteristics, if you don’t count the ugly white tiles of Saint Peter’s (see below). The multi-denominational services are usually in Chinese but they can arrange translators when needed.

Stained Glass windowMuen Church (Moore Memorial Church) is the brick church next to the Peace Cinema, People’s Square. While it’s dwarfed by the retail temples around it, the interior is stunning, with high ceiling arches, dangling chandeliers and a large stained glass window that floods the cavernous room with afternoon light (main image). The church is open 7.30-8.30am, 10-11am, 2-3pm and 7-9pm weekdays; 9am-3pm Saturday and 7-8am, 10-11am, 2-3pm and 7-9pm Sunday.

St ignatius CathedralSaint Ignatius Cathedral (the Xujiahui Cathedral) was designed by English architect William Doyle and built by French Jesuits from 1906-1910. It was once the largest church in the Far East, with a cross-shaped floor plan and 57m high belfries and 31m tall spires. In addition to Sunday mass, the cathedral accepts visitors from 1-4pm, Saturdays and 2-6pm, Sundays.

St Peters ChurchSaint Peter’s Catholic Church was built in the 1930s, but you wouldn’t know it from its grubby white tile exterior, which looks out on the Chongqing Lu elevated road just down the street from the Sinan Mansions complex. Inside, on the third floor, however, is a beautiful mosaic ceiling, stained glass windows and 16 oil paintings – like film stills – depicting the crucifixion.
