Every month talented young Shanghainese illustrator Mojo Wang presents exclusive artworks for
Time Out Shanghai reflecting our community, the city and current affairs.
This month he illustrates the growing (literally!) obesity problem China faces.
Obesity rates are rising rapidly across China, with statistics published last month showing a big upswing in
the number of overweight people. The 2015 Report on Chinese Nutrition and Chronic Disease stated that 9.6
percent of those aged six to 17 were overweight, double the number from 2002. Meanwhile 11.9 percent of all
adults in the country are considered obese, a rise of 67.6 percent from 13 years ago; the obesity rate among
children and adolescents is 6.4 percent, triple that in 2002.
