The best live music in Shanghai this week

Your complete guide to the best gigs and festivals

Charli XCX headlines Strawberry Festival this holiday weekend
Good news! 696 Live rises from the dead once more this weekend having taken over the old Yuncai Cafe spot inside Changshou Park. 696 Live - for those who don't remember - started life at 696 Weihai Lu, which was an organic arts hub until everyone was kicked out to eventually make way for a shared office space that carries the slogan 'creatives welcome'. They've since had a couple of spaces up in Hongkou/Yangpu but been quiet since the end of 2014. Always a welcoming home for alternative music (Torturing Nurse regularly hosted their harsh noise showcases there before), Xiao Bai and the 696 crew are now returning to the fold with this latest incarnation: Tivoli by 696 Live.

Other alternative highlights this weekend include the return to town of thruoutin - who just released a fantastic new EP - and a visit from psych-rockers Gate to Otherside. But of course, it's also festival weekend with Charli XCX, The Vaccines, Marky Ramone and more in town.
