Music and Nightlife

Storm Festival

A Budweiser-backed, Shanghai-born and raised EDM event with a penchant for extra-terrestrial narratives. The line-up features basically any big name EDM star who wasn’t hoovered up by Ultra; KYGO, Marshmello, UZ, Axwell Ingresso, Mija and Laidback Luke are all on the bill. Interestingly though, they’ve also got The Chemical Brothers making their Mainland China debut.

DJ Okapi

Critics' pick

Founder of the excellent Afro-Synth blog, which digs into the country’s forgotten era of late ’80s and early ’90s bubblegum disco-funk and house-laced kwaito grooves, South Africa's DJ Okapi is coming to Shanghai to play an all-vinyl set at DADA

Things to do

2017 NHL China

Critics' pick

The Los Angeles Kings play the Vancouver Canucks in a pre-season game at the Mercedez-Benz Arena ahead of a clash in Beijing on September 23. We can almost guarantee that there'll be plenty of flying elbows, sin-binning and blood on the ice – there will also be some actual hockey, like slap-shots and goals and stuff.

Spider-Man: Homecoming

Spider-Man: Homecoming offers a welcome narrowing of the Marvel mega-verse, away from alien invasions and globe-smashing supervillains and back towards something more local and intimate. It isn’t strictly an origin story: there’s no radioactive spider bite, no wow-I-can-lift-a-car-now moment. This is about a young man figuring out what to do with the power he’s already acquired, while also navigating the pitfalls of everyday teenagerhood.
