It's a weird, turbulent time all around the world, but also a powerful, transformational one. If you're looking to tap into this energy – and even if you're not, you might be surprised – community fundraiser Shanghai Gives a F*** at Lofas this Friday is all about it.
The night will be a celebration of Black lives, art and culture, in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. 'This event is about fixing injustices the best way that we can while not at home,' says Anita Mbunwe, co-organiser of the fundraiser which will see all proceeds going to The Bail Project
to provide assistance for those showing up on the streets across the US in recent weeks. 'You should come if you finally want a reason to feel good about being hungover and were the least bit disgusted by what happened in Minneapolis on May 25.'
It's an important, moving time around the world – whether you're American or not – and also a chance to connect deeper with your community. 'In addition to raising funds for the national Bail Project, we decided to do this event as a way to showcase the great things that Black people are doing out here and remind folks that we are valuable contributing members of the community,' continues Mbunwe. 'As organisers, we're over the moon with the number of Black businesses and allies that decided to get involved either by donating raffle prizes or participating as vendors. Especially considering how quickly all of this came together.'
Expect a lineup of stalls from local Black business owners, including art pieces by Conscious Freakz Inc, t-shirts by RoxanneAfi, jewellery by QAWIA and food from Suga'hai. There'll be a raffle with prizes from Black businesses and allies – think Badass Beauty Bar, The Wine Lady, Pie Society, Roxie, Tacolicious and more. Party vibes and music by Shanghai fixtures like Baron van West and Popasuda Sounds will be going all night.
Shanghai Gives a F*** is happening on Friday 12 and you can buy tickets online (50RMB) or at the door (80RMB).
