Whether you've been thinking for a while about finding yourself a new forever flatmate, or your kids have started asking about a new furry family member, there are literally 1,000s of cats and dogs in Shanghai on the lookout for a new home. And with a wealth of resources – from shelters to adoption days to services advertising rescued animals – it's easier than ever to find the perfect fit for you and your family.

Of course, while there's no denying that bringing an animal into your home can be a lot of work and comes with a lot of questions (especially if you're not staying in Shanghai for life), if you have the space, time and are willing to commit longterm, you can expect unconditional love in return.
