Chef Michael Wendling is on a roll, expanding both upwards and sideways in the Ambassy Court building where he launched his always-packed French bistro Cuivre
in 2011. T for Thai
, Wendling’s upscale Thai restaurant which we gave a four-star review to in our March issue, is right upstairs, and now he’s created a cosy, jeans-themed bar and burger joint in the space which was once the atrium to the building. The narrow area is decked out in denim thanks to a collaboration with G-Star, from jeans-covered square stools to a ragtag denim curtain draped along the wall.
Although the bar has been open for a few months, Wendling has just introduced a menu of premium Aussie beef burgers. This, he says, was always the original plan, but he was too busy opening T for Thai to properly focus on Cu2+’s food offerings until now. The burgers are all named after himself and his partner Fanny Cervera, and the entire space is a sort of ode to their partnership, the two having worked together on restaurant projects for over a decade. The opposing walls feature giant cartoon-like paintings by an artist friend which comically illustrate the biography of the partners’ collaborations and travels throughout the years.
As for the other stars of Cu2+ – the burgers – they are pink-centred, juicy slabs topped with plentiful oozing cheese and layered between lofty buns which are baked in-house. Mikeonthebike (108RMB) comes slathered in truffle mayo, onion confit and brie cheese while Mikeonthebeach (88RMB, pictured) marries basil mayo and sun-dried tomato with melty goat cheese.
There are two non-beef options including the Fannydelamaniana (88RMB), a patty of spicy black pig pork with mayo, emmental cheese and arugula. For sides, there are crispy shoestring french fries with truffle mayo (28RMB) and ‘Frenchy french fries’ with sweet chilli mayo (18RMB). You can also build your own burger with a choice of beef, chicken or black pig pork, cheeses, veggies and housemade mayos. A vegetarian burger is also in the works.
By night, Cu2 converts into a bar (burgers are served until 10pm), offering intriguing cocktails from a bartender formerly of M1NT
and 10 Corso Como
, such as the St Nicolas (68RMB) with vodka, white wine, basil leaves and caramel, and the Fruit Ninja (68RMB) made with Hendrick’s gin, Get27, apple juice, lemon juice, cucumber and wasabi.
