One of the most expensive suites in the city (88,888RMB plus 15 per cent), The Waldorf’s 260sqm Presidential Suite is naturally also one of the most opulent.

Waldorf’s signature crystal chandeliers hang in the dining room, living room, bedroom and even above the whirlpool bathtub. For entertaining, there’s a sleek, full-service kitchen and ten-person mahogany dining table, while an 180-degree view across the Huangpu makes for a spectacular backdrop should you fancy dropping a few more RMB on a dinner party.

One-of-a-kind art pieces are dotted throughout the space too, with heron screens and jade dragons and peacocks sourced by art collectors Rui Shen. The bathroom is stocked with Hermes products and boasts a 7sqm walk-in shower, with eight side spouts and waterfall fixtures.

Who stays there? Former Bond girl Michelle Yeoh (who also stars in the recently-released Aung San Suu Kyi biopic The Lady) , plus a string of European royals. The princes of Luxembourg and Belgium have both enjoyed recent stays, with their bodyguards in the adjoining room.

What’s the damage? 88,888 RMB/night plus 15 per cent.
