Street style: The Shanghai Express

Street snaps from young fashion photographer Roy Zhang

Roy Zhang is a 28-year-old engineering graduate turned street style photographer. Styling himself ‘Shanghai’s answer to The Sartorialist’s Scott Schuman’, he’s shot editorials for the likes of Dior and Grazia and is a regular on the local fashion circuit. His new website The Shanghai Express (www.theshanghaiexpress.com), featuring the best of the city’s street style, will launch this spring. He introduces three of his favourite shots from 2012.

This was the third time I bumped into these teachers; sometimes Shanghai feels far too small! But that’s also one of the joys of street photography.

Leaf was just heading back after visiting a designer friend; there was something about her graceful smile and her outfit that day which really struck me.

This British lady really stood out from the Xintiandi crowds, so I couldn’t resist taking a shot. You can see from her pose that she quite enjoyed the attention.

I shot Eric at a local fashion designers’ conference. It can be hard for men to find fashion role models, but I think Eric’s outfits are always tasteful – I particularly love this combination of a suit with the velvet slippers.

This was a completely spontaneous shot; I was driving past when I caught Lolo in the middle of unpacking some stuff for her new store.

This photo was taken during Shanghai Fashion Week in October last year. Nicole’s actually wearing some of her own designs, which are really simple and elegant.

When I ask if I could get a shot of Shadow, it turned out he actually followed my street photography blog. Since then, we’ve become friends, which is one of the most satisfying things about this job – the chance to meet new people.

I was lucky enough to meet legendary fashion editor and critic Tang Shuang, who’s always wonderfully dressed, near Tianzifang.

I often ride past Xintiandi in search of cool subjects, and that’s where I met Wang Rui. He looks so handsome here, almost as though he’s walked right out of a comic strip.
