With loud dance music throbbing through this small venue, Logan’s Punch is the most upbeat bar in Zhong Plaza – and boss Logan Brouse, formerly of Muse and M1NT, claims it’ll probably be open the latest out of the four. The relaxed, rustic and woody decor is in part meant to represent a cross-section of an old house, with private rooms away from the main bar area with quirky design features such as old-school telephones that ring through to the bar for you to order.
In the absence of the punch that the venue gets its name from, we tried the salted caramel Old Fashioned (50RMB during soft opening). Made with Old Fitzgerald 1849 bourbon and creole bitters, it’s a deliciously fun twist on the classic. ‘We’re not trying to do an intense level of bartending,’ says Brouse. ‘Mixology is fun and great, but I want something more accessible to people, a lot more casual. We’re not making our own bitters or anything.’
Custom punch bowls are in the works; when they’re ready the venue’s trademark punch will be rolled out, with shared bowls expected to be 300-600RMB. Until then, the menu is changing as cocktails are being tried out, with most hovering around the 50RMB mark during soft opening and set to rise after the grand opening, expected later this month.
