At 55RMB, Caffeine’s iced coffee might seem pricey, but considering that breaks down to a mao a minute in terms of the time it takes to make a cup, it works out as great value. The iced press, in which a melting ice-block drips onto coffee grounds for eight hours, is a speciality at this new spot on rapidly-gentrifying Danshui Lu. When sipped in the cool, clean interior (slate, white-painted brickwork and light wood), it’s the perfect antidote to the sweaty summer months.
Caffeine was opened by Chinese-Australians Ryan and Danny who returned from Melbourne bringing that city’s high coffee standards with them. They do a real Australian flat white (35RMB), their house blend is smooth and they insist that their latte (35RMB) is always served in a glass, never a mug. Single origin beans from Kenya, Ethiopia and Guatemala are available to drink on the premises or to take home.
Still in soft opening when we went to press, the food menu hasn’t been finalised, but they are experimenting with wraps and salads. Already available is a rich mousse-like chocolate cake (35RMB) made by a Taiwanese supplier and served with Mövenpick vanilla ice cream (which also makes an appearance in the affogato coffee) and their chewy and tasty cookies that come free with coffee before 12.30pm.
