Beyond the Brick is something of a companion piece to 2014’s The Lego Movie, as narrator Jason Bateman charts the history of everyone’s favourite building blocks over six decades. Directors Daniel Junge and Kief Davidson trace Lego from its origins in 1916 Denmark to show how a simple plaything morphed into what is today a four billion USD ‘monster brand’. The film looks at the in-house designers who play with Lego models all day, visits Lego conventions – complete with robot battles, boat races and blindfold-assembly contests – and meets members of the AFOL (that’s ‘Adult Fan of Lego’) community. Interviews with the heavyweights of the ‘brickfilm’ scene, along with master-builders such as Alice Finch (creator of a giant Lego Rivendell) and Adam Reed Tucker (intricate architecture replicas) convey how Lego has evolved beyond being a child’s toy into a creative tool with its own language.
