Last night, the 2021 edition of Asia’s 50 Best Bars took place online, as has become the way for all big food and drink award shows over the past year. While Hong Kong’s Coa snatched first place on the podium, Shanghai’s representatives did the city proud by bringing home a trio of top 50 accolades.
Shingo Gokan’s multi-level playground Sober Company
jumped seven spots to number five with Shanghai favourites Union Trading Company
(returning to the list at number 31) and Gokan’s decorated first Asia venture Speak Low
(sliding in at number 32) also featuring on the honour roll.

Since his return to Asia and the opening of Speak Low in 2014, Gokan has brought international recognition to Shanghai’s bar scene. As a nod to his 20-year contribution (and counting) to the art of bartending, Gokan was awarded the Roku Industry award 2021 by his peers.
Last but not least, opened in 2014, EPIC
isn’t exactly a new kid on the city's cocktail block, yet it's finally been rewarded with the Campari One to Watch Award 2021 and a place in the top 100 – sitting pretty at number 64. With one of the top five bars in Asia and a rising star under our belt, we’re still confident Shanghai is one of the best places to drink in.
