Here’s a quick humble brag. It’s no secret that we live in a truly world-class cocktail city, but a little reminder every now and then never hurts. Last night, or rather at 4am this morning for us in Shanghai, the annual World's 50 Best Bars ceremony went down in London, which decides the planet’s top places to drink as voted on by a panel of 500 industry experts. Three Shanghai bars made the honour roll: Sober Company
and Union Trading Company
Sliding in at number 39, Sober Company rose up the ranks by three places after hitting 42 last year. The three-in-one concept from the SG Group (Shingo Gokan's actually just got back to town after a stint away and is bartending at Sober Company next week
, Monday 13) isn’t new to such acclaim, first joining the list back in 2019 at 45.

Meanwhile, it’s a strong debut for EPIC – fitting considering drinks the Cross Yu and his team mix up there. The bar on Gaoyu Lu is making its first appearance on World’s 50 Best list at number 41. Also squeezing in at 48 is Yao Lu’s neighbourhood watering hole Union Trading Company. It already has five showings on the Asia’s 50 Best Bars list – 2021, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016 – but like EPIC this is its first on the world stage.

First place went to London's Connaught Bar – the second year on the bounce that swanky bar in Mayfair’s Connaught hotel has picked up the top gong. In other noteworthy news, COA in Hong Kong positioned seventh. The Shanghai location
of Jay Khan's mezcal temple should be opening soon…
for the rest of the rankings. Add it to the cocktail bucket list, if you have one those.
