Forgotten your face mask or lost it on your travels and need to take the metro? No problem.
Masks have been mandatory for every passenger on the Shanghai Metro since early February and, while over half of stations have been selling them at vending machines and convenience stores for a while, according to Shine
the Metro company is rolling out vending machines at all Shanghai Metro stations across the city (except three on Line 11 that are technically part of Kunshan) and both Maglev stations between Longyang Lu and Pudong International Airport. They were due to be in place by last Friday 25 September (though from observations around town, it seems some are still on the way).
Available for adults and children, in packs of three, 20 or 30, the masks can be found in vending machines outside the bag checking gate. The vending machines we checked at Shangcheng Lu station on Line 9 are the normal ones where you usually get your soft drinks and water from (the interface is in Chinese, with pictures at each step).
A pack of three masks costs 6RMB and a pack of 20 is 29.9RMB; the same price for adult and children size. You can pay digitally with Alipay, WeChat Pay and Quick Pass from UnionPay; no cash transaction.
