A Phoenix secretary on the run with some wads of cash lodges in a ramshackle Bates motel to spend the night. Nightmare follows. Anthony Perkins nailed it in this brilliantly produced masterpiece horror Psycho as he acts as one whose mind houses multiple personalities. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock and released in 1960, this meticulous work of art will disturb and terrify anyone.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

Filled with suspense from beginning to end, the film centres around Sally and her paraplegic brother Franklin on a journey to investigate the vandalisation of their grandfather’s grave, along with three close friends. The incident that ensued was just the beginning of an unending nightmare as the group is attacked one by one, and the survivors must do everything they can to escape.

Based on Koji Suzuki’s novel Ring, this creepy and spooky Japanese film will send chills down anyone’s spine. The watching of a surreal videotape prompts a journalist, Reiko, assisted by her ex-husband Ryuji, to investigate and unravel the mystery about the video. What happens afterwards will keep your heart racing more than usual.

Filled with so much tension and disturbance, it follows the story of a grieving family haunted by a mysterious presence after the death of their secretive grandmother. Classified as one of the highest-grossing film franchises of all time, Saw, directed by James Wan, is an upsetting American psychological horror to watch. It is based on a notorious killer named Jigsaw who, rather than killing his victims, outright traps them in situations to test their will to live through physical and psychological torture. Two strangers awaken in a room without recollecting how they got there and soon discover something deadly.

Based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King, IT follows a group of bullied kids (The Losers’ Club) who banded together to face a shape-shifting monster which disguises itself as a clown and preys on the children of a little Maine town called Derry in the summer of 1989.

The film follows a paranormal researcher Masafumi Kobayashi, who is making a documentary film about a series of strange occurrences linked to a folk demon called Kaygutaba. Utilising pseudo-documentary style and found footage conventions, the film is quite unsettling to watch, and it spends the whole two hours living up to that warning.
