The opening ceremony of the 4th Jiangnan Culture and Art & International Tourism Festival was held on 8th September in front of Suzhou Museum. The festival will run for one month showcasing Suzhou and Jiangnan Culture.
During the festival more than 300 performances and some 30 exhibitions will be held. Jiangnan literally means 'south of the river', it refers to a region of eastern China south of the Yangtze River and Suzhou is almost a synonym for Jiangnan. Known as Venice of the East, Suzhou has 2,500 years of history combining classic culture with modern amenities. Long associated in China with high society and elegance, generations of Chinese scholars, artists, and writers have been drawn to the city.
Suzhou is well known for its UNESCO-designated classical gardens including the Humble Administrators Garden, Lingering Garden, Lion Grove Garden and six others. Visitors can also escape the city for a trip to Suzhou’s quintessential countryside and be transported back in time at one of many water towns. Built in 2006 by world-famed local architect I.M. Pei, the Suzhou Museum is also well worth the visit. For history or architecture lovers, they can also check out the recently opened Suzhou Museum West.
Visitors to Suzhou will get to discover the city’s famous gardens, romantic water towns, thousand-year-old temples, exquisite food and world-class museums. With the ongoing tourism festival, now is the best time to visit. For a group of lucky foreigners, there is a chance to win a free day trip to Suzhou on September 17th to experience the city yourself. The costs for the day trip will be covered by Time Out Shanghai.
