Shanghai isn’t short of independent artists and creatives. Looking for something fresh to hang on your walls or a unique piece to gift? Here are a few places where you can get indie art in Shanghai for a few hundred kuai.

Savvy Exchanger

Originally a sustainable clothes swapping event, Savvy Exchanger has now grown into more of an all-round market selling shoes, accessories and illustrations alongside secondhand threads, plus photography works and paintings from emerging Shanghai-based artists.

The next Savvy Excahnger event, Savvy Christmas Market, is scheduled from Friday 10 to Sunday 12 December.

Common Rare

Designer platform Common Rare puts together massive outdoor markets which have over 100 stalls from local and international indie brands, food artisans and drink vendors as well as live DJ and music performances. It’s also great for hunting down unique illustrations, artsy photographs and fun prints from Shanghai creatives.

The next Common Rare event, Five Year Anniverary and Christmas Market, is going to take place between Friday 17 and Sunday 19 in December.

KAOS Art in the Underground

A monthly fixture at C's, underground art and music meet-up KAOS fuses live shows from local bands with a dozen independent stands featuring everything under from poetry, art prints and zines to fashion and tattooing.

The next KAOS Art in the Underground event is scheduled this Friday 26 from 8pm.

Located on the second floor of a lanehouse in Xintiandi, Zzcetistar Bookstore sells zines, illustrations and illustrated products – stationary, greeting cards, brooches and phone cases – all at affordable prices.
