If you’ve ever thought the time spent traversing down YouTube rabbit holes was a waste, think again. At these regular quiz and trivia nights around Shanghai you can put all that weird wisdom (and much more) that you’ve built up over the years to good use and maybe even win something while you're at it.
Cages

Cages

It's not only about Cages, you’ll find one of Shanghai’s largest quizzes here too. Hosted at 8pm sharp every Wednesday by quizmaster Dane Kyle, this one features five rounds with ten points each and a sixth high-stakes wipeout round added at the end for teams needing a gamble. It covers a wide range of topics in classic, audio and visual form, so whether you browse the front page of Reddit on the daily or can recognise a song from its first ten seconds, you’ll likely come across something you know.

Time: Wednesdays, 8pm.

Prizes: First place is rewarded with a bottle of tequila, second with five litres of beer, third with shots and second to last with a jug of beer (so don’t tank in hope of a wooden spoon). Season winners get a 2,000RMB voucher.

Deals: Fuel your brains with pizza, not just one but two as you’ll get the second for 8RMB. Teams also get a jug of beer upon entry to settle any competitive nerves.

The Hop Project

The Hop Project

This football-focused quiz held at The Hop Project every Friday night sees seven rounds of roughly 100 questions that will test you on all areas of the beautiful game – famous red cards, best free kicks, what happened around the grounds in last month…you name it. An emphasis is also placed on world football so don’t think you can get away with just watching Match of the Day. And, if you don’t know the difference between Ligue 1 and League One, that’s okay – join and you might be able to hold your own in conversations when returning to watch the games later in the weekend.

Time: Fridays, 7.30pm.

Prizes: The season already kicked off at the beginning of the year with a trophy awaiting the eventual winners, but for those wanting to join on a random night, there’s shots for the half-time leaders, same for the runners up and a round of drinks for first place (plus eternal glory).

Deals: While there’s no specific deals, the grilled cheese sandwiches go down a treat and may or may not help you remember which country was eliminated from the World Cup on penalties three times in a row.

Abbey Road

Abbey Road

Abbey Road’s weekly trivia night is well-known for its rowdiness, not only because of the amount of booze that gets passed around the venue, but for how involved and competitive (in a friendly way) the teams get. Emmet Sheridan’s in charge of this one and dishes out plenty of headscratchers that span across a load of subjects like literature, movies, animals, geography and sports. It's three rounds of five questions (with each given a point value) and a speed one also thrown in where you’ll have to think quickly on your feet for shots – like naming the last five Batman actors.

Time: Thursdays, 8pm.

Prizes: First place takes home 300RMB in coupons, wine and a round of shots. Second a 200RMB coupon and a round of shots. Third gets to…? You guessed it, sink a round of shots.

Deals: On Thursdays burgers are conveniently 88RMB with a drink – paired well of course with trivial pursuits.

The Rooster

The Rooster

You could spend your Sunday night chilling on the couch, or you can flip the script and get your brain into gear early ahead of the working week. At The Rooster’s quiz night, Emmet Sheridan also rules the roost but, unlike at Abbey Road, he follows a traditional format over six rounds with teams given answer sheets. You’ll start by identifying pictures (like famous houses from sitcoms) and then onto current events and categories that rotate. There’s always a film/TV one though, so you can show off your Netflix education from the past year.

Time: Sundays, 7pm.

Prizes: The season prize is a keg of Goose Island IPA, while nightly champions win shots and Rooster vouchers.

Deals: There’s a variety of drink specials to assist in activating your mind – house wine at 35RMB, 40RMB for a Goose Island IPA, four Jameson Shots at 100RMB and a bottle of prosecco for 50RMB.

El Santo

El Santo

It’s been around for decade and even after a venue change (from The Camel to El Santo), the city’s longest-running quiz continues to stand the test of time. Its longevity isn’t just for the varied selection of questions that’ll make even the biggest king of random facts um and ah, but for the tone quiz master Ned Kelly (who also runs the football quiz below) sets over ten brain-racking rounds – not too serious and guaranteed to make you laugh while also wishing you had taken history at school a little more seriously.

Time: Wednesdays, 7.30pm.

Prizes: Quarterly season winners walk away with 2,000RMB in vouchers. Teams placed on the podium on the night take home bottles of prosecco and more El Santo vouchers.

Deals: Arrive early to take advantage of half-priced drinks until 8pm. Selected food (burritos and tacos) is also half price for the duration of the quiz.

Roxie

Roxie

How much do you know queer history? Every third Thursday of the month prepare to be quizzed on everything from the first AIDS awareness group on New York City to the ‘semi-iconic superheroine who was revived by DC Comics as the 21st-century lesbian’. Team up with friends or the person next to you and find out who’s got all the knowledge at the city’s one and only versatile space Roxie.

Time: The third Thursday of every month, 8pm.

Prizes: Tons of goodies from sponsors around town are up for grabs including Strictly Cookies, The Pearl, Sherpa’s, ESL Passport, The Hai, Hunt, The Fixx Barbershop and more.

Deals: Happy hour pricing on drinks (100RMB for two) runs the length of the quiz. Choose from selected cocktails, beer, wine and mixes.
