Ever since the scandals surrounding his personal life, Edison Chen has been trying to keep a low profile. That didn't stop hordes of fans bringing Jingan to a standstill when he opened this three-storey menswear shop on Julu Lu. The third link in his chain of cooler-than-thou streetwear stores, Juice is achingly hip and, with its neon pink sign, traditional Chinese gateway entrance and a bouncer, walking through the entrance is something akin to entering a nightclub.
Inside, the ground floor is stocked with items from CLOT, the label Chen set up with friend Kevin Poon, grandly housed in two ornate wardrobes. T-shirts, such as those bearing the CLOT logo in the style of Rage Against the Machine’s Renegade album cover, or with the slogan 'the polar bear is always cool… ice cold', go for 580RMB.
Prices climb as you move upstairs, with lines from Head Porter and Original Fake – though the range of Original Fake t-shirts is fairly small, there are some good designs on offer for 600RMB. A smart pair of black Head Porter chinos are 1,420RMB, and a plain fabric belt to hold them up is a rather shocking 1,210RMB.
So far, so urban streetwear. Where things get a little more interesting is in the spa room, halfway between the second and third floors. It’s not an actual spa but a quirkily designed showcase space housing a range of limited edition trainers from Nike, Adidas and Converse among others.
The shoes are pretty special, though the shiny Stan Smiths from Adidas (1,090RMB) with blue and white china-style eagles on the sides, Chinese characters for Shanghai and Hong Kong on the backs and gold trim may break your blingometer.Nicola Davison
