French fast food bakery, Brioche Dorée, has arrived in China with branches on Yanping Lu and Donghu Lu. The worldwide chain specialises in affordable, quality French pastries, quiches and baguettes – though you’ll notice some treats have been tailored to Chinese palettes, such as the sausage puff, a China-only item inspired by pork floss buns.
Made onsite, using French butter and in the case of the baguette and croissant, French flour, the quality is there. But while Brioche Dorée classes itself alongside Shanghai standard bearers such as Baker and Spice
, it remains an on-the-go bakery, with mediocre coffee and a self service format in the Yanping Lu branch, which evokes an up-market Croissant de France feel.
The litmus test of any true patisserie, however, is the baguette, and Brioche's passes the test; deliciously crusty on the outside and light and fluffy within. At only 10RMB, it’s a bargain
