Garden-to-table rooftop restaurant Botanik to permanently close

All good things must come to an end...

Botanik, the lush rooftop restaurant in Tianzifang, has announced its plan to close after almost two seasons in operation. According to a statement from the Botanik team, it's still accepting reservations until September 1. Indeed sad news for Shanghai's food scene – where else in town can you get an ever-changing 12-course menu with the likes of butterfly pea sourdough or sprouted coconut heart with black garlic in an open-air garden?

It's not fully clear what led to the decision, however, Chef Elijah Holland wrote, 'Battling the elements has been a challenge, a fun but sometimes tiring one.' As for the team, Chefs Elijah Holland and Joshua Moroney and Agata Holland are off to Australia for new projects, while Zander Boshoff and Julia Markina from the bar team are heading south for Hong Kong.

Botanik is open four nights a week, from Thursday until Sunday and reservations are a must. Add WeChat ID 'botanikshanghai' to book.
